With spring just around the corner, you might be looking for ways to improve your home and give it a fresh new look.
We’re not talking about tearing down the wallpaper or ripping up the carpets (although you’re more than welcome to venture down that path if you want to), we’re talking about some simple DIY jobs & spring cleaning tips that will have a big impact!
If you’ve grown sick and tired of your current living space, we’re ready to inspire you. Keep reading to learn 4 ways you can improve your home for spring.
Whether you have pristine white walls, or bold colourful statement walls, a fresh lick of paint can make a real difference. Walls that are near doors and along staircases are notoriously the most grubby, because people are constantly touching them. If you have children or pets, you might also notice that the lower levels of your walls have been tainted with muddy paw prints and crayon scribbles.
While you could go around and clean all of the walls to the best of your ability, people often find that household stains are tricky to remove – especially if you opted for matte paint. More often than not, it’s cheaper and more time-efficient to give your home a new lick of paint. Chances are you probably have half a can left in the garage from the first time you did it anyway!
Painting the rooms in your house can be a bit of an awkward job, especially if you have high ceilings. We’d highly recommend investing in a good quality step ladder to help you get the job done. The best type of step ladder for painting and decorating is the platform step ladder. As the name suggests, they come with a large platform at the top which allows you to rest your tin of paint, your paint brushes, and your all-important cup of tea in one place.
Many of us keep our loft hatches closed and forget about the abundance of space above the rafters. Attics tend to be dusty, dark, and unpleasant, which is why we use them for storage rather than pleasure. As the saying goes, things that are out of sight are out of mind, but this isn’t always a good thing.
Over time, your loft can become a dumping ground for a range of unwanted things. It might start with those clothes that no longer fit you, then it’s kids’ toys that they’ve outgrown and before you know it you can barely see the floor because your loft has become so cluttered!
If this scenario resonates with you, then you might be considering a bit of a tidy-up. You might even have a complete loft conversion on the cards. Whatever you want to do with your loft space, we’d recommend installing a new loft ladder first. Getting the access point to your attic right can make all the difference!
Over the winter period, your windows can become very dirty! With high winds blowing dust, debris, and fallen leaves across your property, which can stick to the outside of the windows and create a grimy build-up. In addition, having all the family over for Halloween and Christmas can cause an excessive amount of sticky finger marks across the inside of your windows too.
If this sounds like a familiar scenario in your household then it’s probably time to consider giving your windows a clean. Now, you could ring around a few local window cleaners to get the job done, but with the cost of living going up, you’ll probably find it’s quite expensive. In our opinion, the more cost-effective route is to buy the equipment you need and do it yourself. Once you have a bucket, extendable brush, squeegee, and extension ladder, you can clean your windows as frequently as you want – without waiting for a window cleaner to fit you in.
When it comes to washing the inside of your windows, a simple solution of soapy water and white vinegar should give you a squeaky clean, streak-free finish. Getting the insides and outsides of your windows cleaned in time for spring/summer will allow you to enjoy the view of your garden uninterrupted.
If you’re feeling especially adventurous with your DIY skills, you could try your hand at a garden pergola. These simple wooden structures are fairly easy to build and can be used for a wide variety of spring/summer functions.
For example, you could grow climber plants like wisteria across the top of the pergola to create a natural sheltered canopy. You could weave some solar-powered lights around the pergola to create a cosy outdoor seating area for the summer nights. On hotter days, you could even drape some curtains around your pergola to create a cool shaded area in the garden.
Pergolas are really versatile and they’re great if you want to make better use of your garden during spring-summer. You can find everything you need to build your very own pergola in your local hardware store. Nowadays, you can watch YouTube videos online to learn how to build most things, although if you’re unsure how to do something safely, we’d always recommend getting a professional to help.
So there you have it, if you’ve been looking for a few ways to improve your home in time for spring/summer, we hope you’ve found this blog useful. Cleaning your home and creating some new DIY features can give your home a brand new look and feel.
